Big 12 Football best players of all-time: 17. Terence Newman, CB, Kansas State football
Terence Newman is best known now for his longevity in the NFL. He was drafted in 2003 at No. 5 overall by Bill Parcells when he was with the Dallas Cowboys. He then spent the next nine years with them before moving to the Cincinnati Bengals and Minnesota Vikings for three seasons each. Newman played 15 NFL seasons and was last on the field at the age of 39 — and tried to rejoin the Vikings at age 41 but wasn’t re-signed.
While his NFL career is at the forefront of his resume, he was just as impressive for Kansas State. He played for them from 1999 through 2002 and was the first player in the program’s history to win the Jim Thorpe Award which is given to the best defensive back in the nation annually.
That award was given to him in 2002 when he had 54 tackles, 14 pass defenses, and five picks. A stellar athlete, Newman also got involved with special teams and the offense. He had 32 career kick returns for 834 yards and a touchdown and 27 punt returns for 417 yards and three touchdowns. If that wasn’t enough, he added four receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown plus 26 yards rushing.
With all his speed being on display every weekend, it’s probably not surprising to know he was also a stand-out on the track team for K-State.
