Jackson State football wins its SWAC opener in Deion Sanders’ first conference road game. What did we learn from the conference battle?

On a sunny afternoon in Grambling, La., the Jackson State Tigers broke one of the more impressive streaks. Grambling State’s 33-28 loss snapped a 16-game home winning streak. The victory by Jackson State gave Deion Sanders his first SWAC victory in one of its most hallowed venues.

Late-game fumbles were the story in Grambling.

Grambling State’s only turnover came with less than two minutes to go running back Keilon Elder fumbled at the one-yard line attempting to score the go-ahead touchdown with less than two minutes left to go.

The game, however, did not have to be this close. With the home team within five points, Jackson State had the ball in the red zone with an opportunity to score. Running back, Tyson Alexander was ruled to have fumbled before crossing the goal line.

Penalties did GSU no favors in this game, committing seven false-start penalties on the day. Poor tackling did not help GSU either. One missed tackle turned into a 64-yard touchdown run by Daylen Baldwin on what should have been an eight-yard slant.

Jackson State’s victory was the first win against Grambling since 2012. In the series, Grambling has won nine of the last ten games. Grambling still leads the all-time series 46-24-1.

Here are three takeaways from Saturday’s game.
