It’s March Madness, but there’s still football being played. Here are some quick takeaways from Jackson State football’s win over Mississippi Valley State.

“Coach Prime” and the Jackson State Tigers looked impressive once again in their SWAC home opener against the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Delta Devils are in rebuilding mode as they flashed at times but made miscues indicative of a team still trying to find its way. The Delta Devils also looked like a team that has not played a game in over a year. Sunday’s game was Mississippi Valley State’s season opener after their first two games were postponed because of COVID-19 issues.

This game was about the maturation of Jackson State quarterback Jalon Jones. The Florida transfer had his best game of this short spring season. He was as dangerous with his legs as his arm. The Tigers had a clear advantage on the perimeter with their size and speed, taking advantage of the Delta Devils’ defensive backs.

MVSU came out early, playing hard and giving the Tigers all they could handle in the first quarter. The Devils had an opportunity to score on their first two drives but yielded no points. In addition to several miscues, coming up empty on those drives took the wind out of the Devils’ sails.
