Who’s the starting running back?

The most interesting position battle for Nebraska football is going to be at running back where USC transfer Markese Stepp will go head-to-head with a number of scholarship runnings backs and freshmen.

Marvin Scott, Rahmir Johnson and Ronald Thompkins are three guys that return from last season. They were each three-star recruits and none have the resume that Stepp does, who actually has put together some productive seasons at USC.

Last season, he averaged just 3.7 yards per carry with the Trojans, but it seems like he’s got a good chance to be the starter this fall or at least see a good chunk of the carries.

Even if Stepp emerges, the Huskers are going to need more options at running back. The quarterback run game is nice but Nebraska has relied on it too much over the years.

The Huskers have been at their best when they have productive running backs, think Devine Ozigbo and Dedrick Mills against Rutgers, so the emergence of Stepp and others behind him would be huge for the offense in 2021.
