As hard as it is to believe, the Rutgers football team could be on the verge of landing an elite quarterback in 2022, something it hasn’t done in more than a decade.

When it comes to the recruitment of four-star quarterback Gavin Wimsatt, there is a clear leader and that is Rutgers football.

That’s not what you usually expect to hear in regards to the Scarlet Knights and top quarterback recruits. But head coach Greg Schiano, in his second go-around as head coach of Rutgers football, has made an instant impact and landing Wimsatt would be another huge sign of progress.

Winning games is the biggest thing that Rutgers football can do to become more legitimate and last season, the Scarlet Knights did that winning three Big Ten games under Schiano.

The head coach with New Jersey roots has made keeping players home in the state of New Jersey a big priority and that was a huge factor in a solid 2021 recruiting class that ranked 41st overall according to the 247 sports team composite rankings and ninth in the Big Ten.

That number isn’t incredibly high but it was the first time since the 2016 recruiting class that the Scarlet Knights were in the top 50 overall and among the 10 best programs in the Big Ten.

It was a solid step forward and the Scarlet Knights are doing a great job building on that momentum in 2022 and here’s the latest with Wimsatt.

Wimsatt trending with crystal balls to Rutgers football

It was interesting when you saw the first crystal ball predicting Wimsatt to Rutgers football this week. Steve Wiltfong, a top recruiting analyst for 247 sports was the first to make the prediction and did so with a high level of confidence (7 out of 10).

Josh Edwards, an insider covering Kentucky, which is the home state of Wimsatt, also predicted that the 6-foot-3, 200-pound dual-threat prospect would choose Rutgers as well.

As of right now, Wimsatt is ranked as the No. 89 prospect overall in the 247 sports composite rankings and is the dual-threat No. 3 quarterback, as well as the best recruit in Kentucky.

Wimsatt has no shortage of offers. Michigan, Notre Dame, Nebraska, West Virginia, and a number of SEC schools have offered. Yet, it looks like he will land with Rutgers, which would be the first “elite” quarterback since Tom Savage, No. 101 overall in 2009, signed with the Scarlet Knights.

These kinds of additions can change a program and landing Wimsatt would be a huge leap forward in the rebuilding process of Rutgers football.
