2021 NFL Draft: 3 Ideal landing spots for Trey Lance of NDSU
We are closing in on the 2021 NFL draft and one of the top quarterbacks available is going to be Trey Lance of North Dakota State and here are three perfect landing spots.
One of the most important things in any draft is evaluating the quarterback position and in the 2021 NFL draft, Trey Lance is one of the most difficult players for scouts to evaluate.
For one, Lance played at North Dakota State, which is an FCS power but still doesn’t face the kind of competition that you would see on a weekly basis in a Power-5 conference.
That doesn’t mean Lance can’t succeed in the NFL, as we have seen plenty of others come from lower levels and have success. Steve McNair starred at Alcorn State and Joe Flacco was a standout at Delaware before leading the Ravens to a Super Bowl title.
Jimmy Garappolo is another FCS quarterback that comes to mind, along with Tony Romo. So before writing off Lance, those guys have proven they can play and he’s 6-foot-4, 225 pounds, and has been compared by some to Lamar Jackson and other dual-threat quarterbacks.
The biggest issue for him is after throwing 28 touchdown passes in 2019, he only got to start one game in 2020 and wasn’t great.
Still, it would be a surprise if he didn’t go in the top 10, and here are three ideal landing spots for Trey Lance in the 2021 NFL draft.
Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons will have the easiest path of any team on this list because they own the No. 4 overall pick and likely won’t need to move up to draft Lance.
Like Patrick Mahomes, Lance could use a year behind a veteran quarterback. The Falcons have that guy in Matt Ryan, who seems to be in the latter stages of his career.
You don’t get many chances to draft an elite quarterback and even though Lance isn’t ready to play right away, he could give Atlanta the kind of dual-threat quarterback it hasn’t had with Ryan.
On the flip side, Lance can learn from one of the NFL’s smartest quarterbacks and a consummate pro. It’s a win-win.
