SWAC Football: Two games this weekend could decide the SWAC Title
By Dante Pryor
The Hornets play the SWAC west leaders after an emotional win last weekend.
“I’ve seen a lot of people throughout the week count us out,” Alabama State running back Ezra Gray said after the game. “It seemed like the whole country counted us out. We knew from the jump — we all we got. So that’s what we’re sticking to.” The Hornets had a chip on their shoulder last week and used it to power them to a 35-28 win over #21 Jackson State last weekend.
Gray running for 195 yards did not hurt either. The Hornets had a great game plan, especially defensively. Alabama State did a great job of mixing coverages and disguising pressures confusing Jackson State quarterback Jalon Jones.
This week, it is out of the frying pan and into the fryer as the Hornets travel to Pine Bluff, Arkansas. The Golden Lions look to stay undefeated and tied with Prarie View A&M, who have suspended their spring season. Quarterback Skyler Perry leads the Golden Lions’ hybrid Air-Raid, spread offense.
The Hornets know where their bread is buttered. All-SWAC and Academic All-American running back Ezra Gray fuels the Hornets’ offensive attack. The Hornets did a great job of running Gray and throwing with their RPOs with quarterback redshirt freshman Ryan Nettles.
Speaking of Nettles, this is the third start of his young career. The Hillcrest High School standout comported himself well in a high-pressure situation against Jackson State. However, that was at home. Nettles looks to prove himself on the road against the best in the west.
This one should be fun. By the way, bet the over on this one.
