For quarterback AJ McCarron, he never quite looked the part. His numbers didn’t fully tell his full story either. The former Alabama signal-caller didn’t put up gaudy numbers. At his best, he threw for 3,063 yards. Good but not great. He wasn’t a dynamic runner that made fans want to tune in, nor was he taking home award after award. For McCarron, his bread was essentially buttered through one thing and one thing only.
Winning.
Before McCarron even suited up for his first college game, he sat back as a redshirt freshman and watched as Alabama went 14-0 and took home the National title.
Once McCarron stepped in, the winning train just kept on rolling. He finished his sophomore year 11-1 and rolled to a National title. History repeated itself the following year. In his final year, he surprisingly didn’t win it all but he was on the cusp of it.
McCarron’s inclusion on this list is questionable when you’re looking at just the numbers. He played in a time where other QBs were lighting the world on fire. In his case, however, he produced solid seasons and simply kept winning.
With this list filled with players who took the college football world by storm with their arm talent and not so much the winning that they did on the field, there has to be room for a guy who did the opposite.
