College football: 30 best college quarterbacks of all-time
30 best college football quarterbacks of all-time: 10. Ty Detmer, BYU football
College stats:
- 15,031 passing yards
- 121 TDs
- 65 INTs
- 62.6 completion percentage
Ty Detmer’s path to an all-time great quarterback began as a choppy one. With a redshirt freshman year, Detmer split quarterback duties with Sean Covey. Although his numbers would suffer that year, once he got a stranglehold on the starting position, he began destroying the opposition.
He led BYU to the Western Athletic Conference Championship in 1989 by throwing for over 4,500 yards. While the numbers were jaw-dropping, he took things to another level the following year.
In only 12 games, Deter threw for 5,188 yards with 41 TDs. His interceptions were a bit high with 28 but his 175.6 passer rating and 64.3 completion percentage more than made up for it. Those numbers, along with his early-season win over then number one-ranked Miami, led to Deter bringing home the Heisman Trophy, the Davey O’Brien, and Maxwell awards.
He followed up that epic season with another all-timer. This time, however, his team wasn’t the powerhouse that it was in the past.
Still, Deter currently ranks 27th all-time in passer rating and was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2012.
