College football: 30 best college quarterbacks of all-time
30 best college football quarterbacks of all-time: 3. Steve McNair, Alcorn football
College stats:
- 15,010 passing yards
- 122 TDs
Steve McNair’s placement on this list almost came at another position. Originally, he was offered a scholarship to play running back at the University of Florida. Instead of swallowing his pride and taking the offer, McNair figured it would be better off if he played for Alcorn State where they gave him the chance to play QB.
Needless to say, he made the right decision.
McNair had the ultimate arm in college. He routinely chewed up defenders with long-range bombs. During his years at Alcorn, he lit the scoreboard regularly. He fell just shy of 3,000 yards that year by throwing for 2,895 and in his following two seasons, he easily eclipsed the 3,000-yard mark.
Every year McNair was impressive but his senior year, he took his great numbers and turned them into legendary ones.
With 5,377 passing yards, 907 rushing yards, and 56 combined touchdowns, it’s mind-boggling to think that McNair didn’t walk away with the Heisman Trophy.
Regardless of that glaring omission from his college resume, McNair put together the sort of career that most athletes can only dream of. He put up video game-like numbers in an era that was mostly dominated by hard nose defenders and running games.
