30 best college football quarterbacks of all-time: 29. Charlie Ward, Florida State football

Career stats:

  • 5,747 passing yards
  • 49 touchdowns
  • 62.3 completion percentage

Charlie Ward glided down the basketball court every time he dribbled the ball. The defensive schemes hardly mattered as he rained threes, hit reverse layups and set up his teammates for wide-open shots.

Wait, wrong sport.

Ward was a two-sport athlete when he attended Florida State University. When he wasn’t giving it to defenders on the hardwood, he was shredding defenses on the field. During his first two years, his focus and playing time went to basketball but when he gave his undivided attention to football, the results were special.

In his final season, he threw for just over 3,000 yards and completed 69.5 percent of his passes while also throwing for 27 touchdowns. In terms of putting the ball in harm’s way, Ward rarely did that as he only had only four picks on the season.

Everything that could be won, was essentially taken by Ward. The two-sport athlete won the Heisman, the Maxwell Award, the Johnny Unitas Award, the Sullivan Award, the ACC Offensive Player of the Year and was an All-American.

Regardless of his mountains of success, Ward was not selected in the first round of the NFL draft and switched his focus to basketball instead. For as great as he was in college, we’ll never know what he could have been in the pros.
