College football: Ranking every Heisman Trophy winner

17. Ranking every Heisman Trophy Winner: Doug Flutie, Boston College Eagles football
One of the more impressive collegiate players of all-time is Doug Flutie, who did not have the size you look for in a quarterback but possessed everything else that can make one great. Sure, Flutie was small, but he played bigger than his size on every occasion, starting as a true freshman at Boston College, and finishing out as a Heisman Trophy winner.
By the time he was done at BC, Flutie had set the all-time passing record for major programs, becoming the first passer to throw for over 10,000 yards. Most known for his incredible Hail Mary pass to Gerard Phelan against Miami (FL), Flutie put together four incredible seasons for the Eagles and is widely considered one of the best college football players of all-time.
In his Heisman Trophy-winning season for Boston College, Flutie tore up the competition, throwing for nearly 3,500 yards and 27 touchdowns, leading the Eagles to a 9-3 record. The prior year, Flutie was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, as the award went to Nebraska’s Mike Rozier, and expected to come in and win it as a senior, Flutie did just that.
Throughout his career, Flutie has defied the odds, and despite his small stature. He became an absolute giant in the college football world. He would go on to play 20-plus years at the professional level across the CFL and the NFL, and his pass to Phelan is one of the marquee moments in the history of the sport of football.
