8. Ranking every Heisman Trophy Winner: Danny Wuerffel, Florida Gators football
Heading into the 1996 college football season, the Florida Gators had only seen one of their players ever take home the Heisman Trophy. That player, Steve Spurrier, won the award 30 years earlier, and now, standing on the sidelines as the team’s head coach, it was time for another Gators quarterback to take home the coveted Heisman Trophy.
His quarterback that season was Danny Wuerffel, the highest-rated quarterback coming out of high school, and a player that already had immense success at the collegiate level. As a redshirt freshman, Wuerffel split time under center but still was able to manage 22 touchdowns passes. The following season, he captured the starting job, and would never let go, becoming an All-American as a junior the following year.
As a junior, Wuerffel threw for over 3,200 yards and 35 touchdowns, finishing third in the Heisman Trophy balloting. Entering his senior season, he was seen as a front-runner for the award, and he did not disappoint, not only winning the Heisman Trophy but leading the Gators to a national championship by throwing for over 300 yards and three touchdowns against Florida State.
By winning, Wuerffel and Spurrier became the first duo to win have the head coach and quarterback both win a Heisman Trophy at the same school and by the time Wuerffel was done, he had set the SEC mark for career touchdown passes with 114. Over his career, Wuerrfel racked up nearly 11,000 passing yards and is one of the best collegiate quarterbacks of all-time.
