College football: Ranking every Heisman Trophy winner

3. Ranking every Heisman Trophy Winner: Tony Dorsett, Pittsburgh Panthers football
From the second he stepped on the field as a freshman for the University of Pittsburgh Panthers, Tony Dorsett was destined for greatness. Growing up just outside of Pittsburgh, Dorsett was ready to play for the University, and as a freshman, he started a four-year stretch that would culminate with him being the NCAA’s all-time leading rusher.
During his first season, Dorsett got the party started early, becoming not only the first Pitt running back to gain 1,000 yards, but he also led the nation in rushing and was a consensus All-American. That was quite the start for Dorsett, who continued to put up eye-popping numbers and would go into his senior season as a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.
As his team made a run towards a national title, Dorsett provided them with everything they needed on the offensive side of the ball, averaging over 200 yards per game down the stretch. Pitt didn’t win the national title that season, but Dorsett ran away with the Heisman Trophy, dominating Ricky Bell in the voting by getting over 700 out of 842 first-place votes.
Dorsett racked up 1,948 yards his final season at Pitt, giving him 6,082 yards for his collegiate career, setting a record that stood for 22 years. Not only did he set the rushing record, but he graduated with 18 NCAA records in total and would go on to have an outstanding career at the next level, becoming a Rookie of the Year, winning a Super Bowl, and going to four Pro Bowls.
