Ohio State Football: Justin Fields looks like top-5 pick in pro day
As far as former Ohio State football quarterback Justin Fields, there’s been some talk about his stock falling a little in the 2021 NFL draft.
But after performing the way he did in the Ohio State football pro day on Tuesday, it’s hard to see Fields not being a top pick in the 2021 NFL draft, even with a number of other quarterbacks being rumored to go early.
According to a tweet from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Fields ran the 40 in a 4.44, which was the fastest time a quarterback has put up in the 40-yard dash since Robert Griffin III.
Apparently, according to Nick Baumgardner, he also stumbled a little out of the gates, which is extremely impressive, to say the least.
And just for good measure, Fields showed he’s much more than an athlete and put on an impressive throwing workout too, especially with darts like this.
Breaking down Fields draft stock
When Lamar Jackson was drafted a number of teams passed on him. There was talk that he was going to struggle in the NFL game and have accuracy issues, etc.
But so far, Jackson has been a dominant force in the NFL and the Ravens have done a masterful job of building an offense around him. Baltimore hasn’t gotten to the Super Bowl yet, but plenty of teams would love to have Jackson as their quarterback and in Fields, they could get something similar.
Coming out of Louisville, Jackson didn’t complete 60 percent of his passes. He was a 57 percent passer during his three seasons. However, the former Heisman winner is the ultimate dual-threat and has become one of the great running quarterbacks in NFL history.
Fields is also 6-foot-3 such as Jackson, but he was also a guy that completed 68 percent of his throws in college.
Obviously, he played with some elite talent with the Ohio State football program, but he threw 67 touchdown passes and just nine interceptions. Last season he completed 70.2 percent of his throws and also has 17 career rushing touchdowns.
With the 49ers recent trade up to the No. 3 spot, it’s clear that quarterbacks are a high priority for a number of teams and while it’s pretty clear that Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson will be the first two selected, it’s possible that Fields gets into the top five too.
Mac Jones and Trey Lance also are getting talked about as top-five picks with Atlanta possibly looking for a long-term replacement for Matt Ryan. Other teams such as Detroit, Denver, Carolina and New England could also be in the mix to trade up.
The 2021 NFL draft is going to be intriguing when it comes to the quarterbacks, but after his showing Thursday, it’s hard to see Fields lasting too long.
