#10: Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 1988

As one can surely imagine, choosing the best Notre dame CFB team ever is not the simplest task in the world. However, I ultimately came to the conclusion that 1988 was in fact their greatest year. They were unbeaten, the consensus national champs, and played in a time period where football players wore actual helmets. Under coaching legend Lou Holtz, the Irish faced four schools who finished the season ranked in the top ten and beat all of them. Enough said.

#11: Pittsburgh Panthers, 1976

Being their only lossless and tieless season since 1917, the 1976 run seemed to be the best choice for Pitt’s peak year. The Panthers were the consensus champs with convincing wins over three ranked opponents, two of which finished the season ranked in the top twelve.

#12: Syracuse Orange, 1959

The Orangemen were also consensus champs, with an 11-0 record and a star running back in Ernie Davis, who took home the Heisman Trophy just two seasons later. Syracuse went on to take down #4 Texas in the Cotton Bowl, 23-14. Not bad for a basketball school.
