Jackson State Football: 3 takeaways from blowout loss to Southern
By Dante Pryor
Jackson State quarterback Jalon Jones struggled for the second straight week completing less than 60 percent of his passes and throwing another interception as the Jackson State Tigers dropped their second straight game this afternoon against the Southern Jaguars 34-14 at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
One of the narratives this entire spring, Jackson State’s inconsistent offensive line play, reared its head this afternoon. Jones was under pressure most of the afternoon, and the Tigers struggled to rerun the football, averaging just 2.6 yards per rush. Southern used the formula Alabama State had against the Tigers’ offense two weeks ago.
Southern did a great job of mixing zone and man coverage, confusing Jones, forcing many bad throws. The Jaguars moved Jackson State’s offensive line rendering the running game ineffective. Offensively, Jackson State had no answer for Southern’s rushing attack. The Jags ran for 294 yards against the Tigers’ defense.
Southern’s dominant running game allowed the Jaguars to dictate the pace of the game dominating the time of possession. The Tigers had the football for just 17 minutes and 42 seconds.
The Tigers have a lot of questions to answer after this loss. Here are three takeaways from today’s game.
