Jackson State Football: 3 takeaways from blowout loss to Southern
By Dante Pryor
1. Quick takeaways for Southern
The Jaguars power running game was in full effect against the Tigers this weekend, rushing for 294 yards. Head coach Dawson Odoms and his offensive staff have to be satisfied with how his team ran the football. They were able to move the ball consistently with the run game and dominate the pace and time of possession.
Defensively, the Jags had four sacks and an interception. The defense stifled the Tigers’ running game and kept JSU’s passing game confused all game long. The win keeps Southern atop the SWAC West this spring.
Southern finishes their spring season against Grambling in the Bayou Classic on April 17.
Quick takeaways for Jackson State
Coach Sanders and his offense have some holes to fix. The offensive line has not played well in the last three games. Opposing defenses have been able to make too many plays in the backfield against JSU. Running back, Tyson Alexander has not duplicated the outstanding performance he had against Grambling.
The lack of a running game has disrupted what the offense wants to do and has put too much on the shoulders of quarterback Jalon Jones. The Florida transfer has had issues getting comfortable because of the pressure he’s had to deal with.
The Tigers play the Alabama A&M Bulldogs on April 10.
