College football’s most underrated coach from each Power 5 conference
By Austin Lloyd
Pac-12: Kyle Whittingham, Utah
The story of Kyle Whittingham is one of a man who merely cannot get over the hump. As one can imagine, Utah is not the easiest place to reel in high-profile recruits. However, Coach Whitt makes it work, as he has led the Utes to six consecutive bowl appearances (could have been seven if they had been willing to participate in the 2020 bowl season), four of which they have won.
A product of the aforementioned Urban Meyer, Kyle has been no stranger to helping his Utes get some relevance, even in regards to national championship talks.
In 2008, he led Utah to an unbeaten season, capped off by a convincing win over top dog Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. And more recently in 2019, the Utes were ranked fifth heading into conference championship week, being just one win from a playoff spot before falling heavily to Oregon.
In more recent memory, some have called for Whittingham’s firing, as he is seemingly unable to pull it out in the big moments. But nonetheless, he is the sole reason for the University of Utah being on the college football map over the last 15 years.
