SWAC Football: 3 Takeaways from Jackson St. vs Alabama A&M
By Dante Pryor
Freshman quarterback Quincy Casey was solid in a losing effort.
The game plan for freshman quarterback Quincy Casey was simple; give him many makeable, short to medium throws that will allow him to have success and not turn the ball over. Casey followed the plan well and threw for 323 yards and four touchdowns, starting over Jalon Jones.
Jones struggled the last two games –both losses — throwing three interceptions in those games as well as completing less than 55 percent of his passes in those games, both season lows. In Jones’ defense, the offensive line play was terrible, and he was under constant pressure against both Alabama State and Southern.
Casey did play well, but Alabama A&M is an offensive powerhouse, not a defensive powerhouse. That’s not to say that Casey’s performance should have an asterisk, but it is hard to evaluate the performance against such a porous defense. Casey did, however, at least earn an opportunity to start the Tigers’ last game of the season against Prairie View A&M.
Casey might shake up the depth chart this fall with Shedur Sanders added to the mix to start at quarterback this fall. If Casey starts against Prairie View and plays well again, he could bump Jones down the depth chart and possibly in the transfer portal.
