HBCU Football: 3 keys for Eddie George’s success at TSU
By Dante Pryor
Great Coaches hire great staffs
Across sports, there have been coaches that have done well without much or any coaching experience. It is difficult to measure how well Eddie George will do because there have been few coaches that have been hired after having no experience in any aspect of the game. Steve Nash’s hire in New Jersey and Steve Kerr in Golden State from the NBA are the closest examples. However, both were involved in basketball in some capacity.
At the college level, this is completely unique. However, coaches who had no experience as either coordinators or position coaches have one common attribute; ones who have succeeded hired great staffs. From the strength and conditioning coach to the assistant coach, a great staff can make or break a program.
There are certain characteristics every great staff has. Great collegiate staffs can recruit. The head coach knows the type of players they want and the staff does a crack job of finding and developing those players.
Staffs can also develop talents. Whether that is taking a five-star and making them into a first-round NFL talent or developing that diamond in the rough, player development is the bedrock of a great program.
Two coaches with NFL experience, Peerless Price and Antonio Rodgers Cromartie, are both part of TSU’s current staff and it might be prudent to retain them.
Both have HBCU football experience which would be a plus. George is also targeting former NFL coaches like Hue Jackson and Jeff Fisher according to footballscoop.com.
The “Pro Model” has worked in places like Arizona State. It would be interesting if it could work at Tennessee State.
