HBCU Football: 3 takeaways from Southern’s rout of Grambling

3. Broderick Fobbs has a lot to figure out before the fall
The 49-7 loss to Southern seemed an appropriate close to what can only be described as a spring with a confluence of issues for the Grambling State Tigers. The G-Men looked out of sync offensively and defensively all game.
The offense looked out of sync because Geremy Hickbottom entered the transfer portal on March 25th. Soon after Hickbottom entered the portal, the Tigers paused team activities. Though it sounds simple, no practice and no workouts after your starting quarterback — and best offensive player — decided to transfer has a significant effect on your game plan.
Grambling canceled two games, and all of their preparation was for Southern in the Classic. The issue was, they could not practice. As a result, the new starting quarterback, Elijah Walker, was given a simplified game plan, and it showed.
Fobbs and the remaining offensive staff tried to give Walker quick reads to get the ball out quickly. When Southern saw the Tigers were not going to try to throw downfield, the Jags crowded Grambling’s receivers, and the pass rush had a field day.
The paired down game plan resulted from offensive coordinators Mark Orlando and Kendrick Nord resigning earlier in the year. It seems that Fobbs needs to figure out the roster and the coaching staff before the fall season starts.
