HBCU Football: 3 takeaways from Southern’s rout of Grambling
By Dante Pryor
1. Southern could see some seniors return for their free year
The Jaguars have the essential characteristic of a championship team, identity. Southern know who they are and both recruit and play to what their offensive and defensive philosophy is. Southern wants to pound the football and throw it over the top.
Defensively, everything surrounds the offensive line. The Jags have a pass rush that can get home with their front four. Behind their front, Southern disguises coverage well, confusing opposing quarterbacks.
This fall in the SWAC is going to be fun. Arkansas-Pine Bluff won the West this spring, Prairie View A&M is experiencing a rebirth with their football program, and you have Southern, who lost to APBU earlier this spring.
The Jags could see many of their seniors return for their extra season of eligibility the NCAA has given all players because of COVID-19. One of those players includes Ladarius Skelton. Another is linebacker Calvin Lunkins.
If Odoms can keep this experience and leadership, Southern will cause all types of trouble for the SWAC this fall. Southern is a special prep because of their unique offense. The Jags run-based spread has been trouble for opponents most of the spring.
Southern bringing back veterans for an additional year puts them in the driver’s seat in the SWAC West this fall.
