2021 NFL Draft: Lions get biggest steal in Penei Sewell at No. 7
Who would have thought that Penei Sewell would have dropped to No. 7 in this year’s draft with the Bengals in desperate need of a left tackle?
Well, the Detroit Lions have to be counting their blessings after Cincinnati basically gifted them a future Pro Bowl offensive tackle as Sewell will be playing in that Honolulu blue next season. He gives the Lions their best first-round pick in years and it’s a refreshing sight for Lions fans.
Detroit probably didn’t see Sewell falling to No. 7 overall, but this is a great value pick and will probably end up as the steal of the first round.
Penei Sewell ensured the Lions didn’t pull a “same old Lions”
If you’ve followed the Lions over the course of their history, a phrase has been thrown around quite a bit: “Same old Lions”. The term SOL was sometimes over-used any time something bad happened to the Lions or any time they found a way to make a draft mistake or lose a huge lead late in games.
Sewell made sure that “same old Lions” didn’t apply to their 2021 NFL Draft pick.
Falling to No. 7 in the draft, Sewell gave Detroit one of its easiest decisions in years. Heck, this may have been the easiest pick of any team outside of Jacksonville in this year’s draft.
A lot of Lions fans probably wanted some flash with Justin Fields or DeVonta Smith, but they can get a receiver later in this draft and maybe look at a quarterback next cycle.
Sewell was the best lineman in this year’s draft and the fact that he fell to No. 7 is a huge win for Detroit.
