2021 NFL Draft: Browns add needed CB depth with Greg Newsome II
The Cleveland Browns have come a long way from franchise laughing stock to AFC Championship game contender. The Browns continue to upgrade their secondary by drafting Northwestern Wildcats cornerback Greg Newsome II with the 26th overall pick.
The Browns were close to beating the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round and competing in the AFC championship game. On the defensive side of the ball, the Browns had to make some upgrades at each level of the defense to be more efficient. They addressed a huge concern along with the edge opposite Myles Garrett by picking up Jadeveon Clowney.
The Browns’ secondary showed some serious concerns and inconsistencies. Last season, the Browns’ defense was ranked 21st in points allowed per game (26.2) and 22nd in passing yards allowed per game (247.6). They also allowed 214-of-352 total first downs from opposing offenses in the passing game and 31-of-50 total touchdowns allowed in the passing game.
Injuries have it difficult for the Browns to fully secure which player will be their starter at the cornerback. Newsome has shown that he can be one of the top cornerbacks in this Draft. Injuries have also limited Newsome in his collegiate career. He does have the skills and tangles to be a lockdown cornerback at the next level.
In the 17 games played throughout his collegiate career, Newsome accumulated 71 total tackles, 55 solo tackles, 20 pass deflections, and one interception. He is a freak of an athlete that can make the play at the ball in solid contention. Newsome can be a legitimate lockdown corner in a loaded Browns secondary that has potential if he remains healthy.
