2021 NFL Draft: Top Five Picks from the second round
Addressing the offense in many ways is the most objective for the New York Giants in the 2021 NFL Draft. There is some urgency the Giants need for a premier pass rusher. The Giants returned their leading sacker in defensive tackle/end Leonard Williams, who accounted for 11.5 sacks. Outside of him, the Giants do not have a reliable pass rusher.
The Giants traded back and still drafted one of the best edge rushers in the 2021 NFL Draft in Azeez Ojulari with the 50th overall pick. Ojulari will give the Giants youth and consistency in getting into the backfield. He has a great first explosive step which gives him an immediate advantage against the offensive line.
With the lack of overall talent on the defensive side of the ball, outside of Leonard, Ojulari will come into the locker room as a leader and key playmaker.
The Washington Football Team addressed their defense by taking a middle linebacker in the first round. Washington knew with an older quarterback in Ryan Fitzpatrick, that he would need more solid protection. Last season, the offensive line gave up 50 sacks, which is tied for third-most in the league.
Washington cannot allow the veteran quarterback to be constantly pressured in the pocket. The Washington Football Team was able to select the best available offensive tackle in Samuel Cosmi in the mid-second round with the 51st overall pick. Cosmi is a strong and consistent tackle who is quick and nimble against faster edge rushers. He is also strong and sturdy against more aggressive pass rushers.
Cosmi will a reliable tackle for Washington in the passing game by keeping the pocket clean and dominating through run blocking. In a division trying to become more efficient in getting to the quarterback, Washington made a steal for Cosmi in the second round.
