Dave Aranda’s first season with Baylor football didn’t quite go as planned, but that’s what happens when there’s a ton of roster turnover in a COVID-19-affected season under a new staff.

The Bears lost Matt Rhule to the NFL after he led the program to a New Year’s Six bowl in 2019. He turned the program around quickly only to depart for greener pastures and more money in the NFL and the Bears immediately turned to the elite LSU defensive coordinator.

Now he’s entering his second season with a clean slate as we can probably just call 2020 “year zero” for new head coaches.

Aranda could still afford to go after some big names in the portal to improve the immediate outlook in 2021 and these guys should be the first targets.

This one would just make sense for Baylor.

Maurice Hampton hit the transfer portal this offseason after Dave Aranda recruited him at LSU and he played just two seasons for the Tigers. He did get to play one season under Aranda so the two have a relationship and it would make sense the Bears add some depth to the defensive backfield after a disappointing 2020 season.

Hampton is one of the best defensive backs on the market and was actually a top-100 recruit in the 247Sports rankings. He was listed as a cornerback out of high school so he has the versatility to play anywhere Aranda may need him.

In those two seasons with LSU, Hampton finished with 37 tackles, two tackles for loss, and a pass breakup. He’d instantly upgrade the defensive backfield in Waco.
