The fear of the transfer portal is the possibility of going unsigned. But, for many college football players, the scholarship is the only route to a college degree. Fortunately for HBCU football stars Jalon Jones and Quincy Carter, they will not have that issue next fall.

Jones lands at Mississippi Delta Community College while Carter transferred to SWAC, rival Alabama A&M University.

Jones started the first five games for the Tigers this spring playing well, though he struggled with accuracy at times. Then, after back-to-back losses to Alabama State and Southern, Jones was pulled in favor of Carter.

Jones completed 55.25 percent of his passes for over 1,000 yards, 11 touchdowns, and three interceptions. Jones threw all three interceptions in JSU’s losses against the Hornets and Jaguars. In Jones’ defense, the offensive line struggled against better competition and he was under duress often.

Carter had good numbers this spring as well, throwing for 465 yards and five touchdowns.

Making way for Shedeur Sanders

Despite the issues along the offensive line, Jones and Carter’s transfers are not surprising. It was inevitable that Shedeur Sanders would start this fall, and it is not because he’s coach’s son either. Sanders has impressed at practice and was highly-touted out of high school.

Baylor, Alabama, and Georgia all offered Sanders out of high school. Both Jones and Carter were looking at backing up Sanders this fall. Despite their solid play this spring, Sanders is the better prospect with the higher ceiling.

Coach Sanders is looking to turn over the Jackson State roster, and the quarterback was a position that was going to turn over this fall.

This fall, Jones can start at MDCC, and Carter goes to AAMU as QB2. Still, starting quarterback Aqeel Glass is done after this season, and Carter has three years of eligibility left after this season.
