Kyle Whittingham did it again. He made yet another offseason move with a big addition that essentially no one is talking about nationally.

The Utah football coach picked up a commitment from one of the top transfers on the market this offseason in Baylor’s Charlie Brewer. But for some reason, no one is talking about it and Utah is still overlooked in the eventual 2021 Pac-12 title race.

The Utes hoped that South Carolina transfer Jake Bentley would be a breakout star at quarterback in 2020 but he struggled in the pandemic-shortened season. He had 882 yards and six touchdowns with six interceptions. He did rush for over 100 yards, too, but the Utes finished with a 3-2 record, and just that quickly, people counted them out moving forward.

After a disappointing season, the national media has suddenly overlooked the Utes again and that’s something they’re used to.

Whittingham has never gotten the respect he deserves and if Brewer landed at a program like Oregon or USC, it would be all over the headlines. But since he’s at Utah now, it has flown under the radar and that’s not exactly fair.

Utah football will be a title contender

Utah finished 3-2 last year and that followed back-to-back first-place finishes in the Pac-12 South. Basically, the talent is still there for the Utes to make a run at another division crown.

USC, UCLA, and Arizona State are all Utah’s biggest competition, but there’s a good chance the Utes will be better than at least two of them this season with Brewer at quarterback.

People forget just how good he was at Baylor. In fact, he passed for 9,700 yards and 65 touchdowns in four seasons with the Bears. He comes to a program that is a top-tier quarterback away from being a national contender. Not only will the Bears contend for a Pac-12 South with him under center, but they’ll also be in the playoff conversation.

Brewer is one of college football’s elite passers but for some reason, he’s not treated as such because he’s a Ute.

Utah is going to make people look silly yet again in 2021.
