HBCU Football: Memphis’ Markevion Quinn transfers to Alcorn State
By Dante Pryor
There’s an adage that says, “you can’t go home again.” Quarterback Markevion Quinn wants to prove otherwise. So the Ruleville High School standout returns to Mississippi to continue his college career at HBCU football’s Alcorn State.
Quinn tweeted, “I’m 110% locked in fasho.”
After leading Ruleville High School to three playoff appearances, Quinn went to Pearl River Community College. While at Pearl River C.C., Quinn was rated the 10th-best JUCO quarterback by 247Sports.
Now he’s headed to Alcorn State to compete for the starting job.
Where does Quinn fit?
Coming into next season, Felix Harper is the incumbent starting quarterback. In 2019, Harper led the Braves to a SWAC title. Unless Quinn comes in and blows the coaching staff away during practice and scrimmages, it is unlikely that Harper is supplanted.
However, Harper is a redshirt senior, and you don’t maintain success the way the Braves have maintained success without a plan of succession at quarterback. Quinn could be QB1 in waiting for the Braves.
Head coach Fred McNair and offensive coordinator Quinn Gray have to love what Quinn brings to the table. As a true dual-threat quarterback, Quinn is as dangerous with his legs as his arm. In addition, Quinn is a plus one in the run game with a remarkable ability to read the defensive end on zone-read plays.
Quinn also has breakaway speed in the open field as a runner. Despite being a running quarterback, Quinn does an excellent job of hanging in the pocket to find the open receiver. He does not take off if the initial read is not there.
Even if Harper is QB1 next season, Quinn is a quality backup and both coach McNair and Felix know the value of a backup. Harper came in relief of Noah Johnson due to injury in 2019 due to injury.
Quinn might not start this season for Alcorn, but the future is bright for both he and the Braves.
