Nebraska football missed out on four-star quarterback MJ Morris, who committed to NC State but now, the Huskers are trending with a new target.

It didn’t come as a huge shock when four-star quarterback MJ Morris picked NC State over Nebraska football on Thursday. But his commitment did finally become official.

Morris was trending with crystal ball projections to North Carolina State leading up to his decision and the recruiting experts proved to be right.

For NC State, it means landing a former top-50 recruit and one that’s still ranked 206th overall and 14th at the position.

When Morris visited Nebraska football during the spring game, it felt like the Huskers might be the team to beat, however, Morris, who is from Georgia, was really impressed by NC State’s tradition of producing NFL quarterbacks, as well as offensive coordinator Tim Beck, who at one time worked at Nebraska.

"“Coach Beck being at Ohio State, Texas, and Nebraska and his track record with quarterbacks, being under Urban Meyer, that went a long way,” Morris’s father Eddie told 247Sports. “He sold that to MJ and the quarterbacks he worked with.”"

It’s a huge win for the Wolfpack and a big loss for Nebraska football. Yet, Nebraska is already trending with another QB target.

Nebraska football’s next 2022 QB option

Two days ago, even before Morris committed to NC State, Huskers 247 expert Brian Christopherson put in a crystal ball for Richard Torres to land at Nebraska.

Torres isn’t as highly-ranked as Morris and he’s a different kind of quarterback at 6-foot-6, 210 pounds out of San Antonio, Texas.

Torres is ranked 768th overall in the 247 sports composite rankings for 2022, 57th among quarterbacks. Yet, the 247 sports rankings have him ranked 38th at quarterback.

One reason for the crystal ball is that Torres is now the top target for Nebraska at quarterback. He’s also taking a visit to Lincoln today before taking trips to Kansas State, TCU, SMU, and UTSA.

Nebraska is certainly going to try and lock up a commitment as soon as possible. There’s a short supply of quarterbacks in the 2022 class, so it will be interesting to see if Scott Frost and the Huskers can close.

They do appear to be the favorite to land Torres and if that doesn’t work out, the Huskers will need to shift their thinking. But Torres is the first quarterback to take an official visit in this class, so it could sway him into making a commitment.
