With 90 percent of projected starters being upperclassmen, Texas Tech football is expected to reload and compete this year in the Big 12. Texas Tech’s spring practices and games wrapped up a while back and there is optimism in the air in Lubbock.

The Red Raiders have not had a ton of success over the past decade, with the highest win total in a season being eight games. Texas Tech has been in and out of bowl games and has at best, finished in the middle of the conference.

The Kliff Kingsbury experiment kept the Red Raiders’ air raid offense, with exciting skill players, as well as, quarterback play. However, defensively, Texas Tech did not adjust. Matt Wells is in his third season at the helm, and although has not had the best of starts to a tenure, has had to endure quite a lot, since transitioning from Utah State.

As it seems like every school did, Texas Tech was heavy in the transfer portal and ended up getting five players since the beginning of 2021, headlined by a player mentioned in this list. Most recently, the Red Raiders landed Troy wide receiver Kaylon Geiger, who posted 1,625 receiving yards and eight touchdowns through two seasons with the Trojans.

Texas Tech has a low floor, but a decently high ceiling. Based on the three key players from the spring, could dictate how the rest of the team falls into place. Here’s a look at three players that made an impact during spring ball and will be crucial pieces to Texas Tech’s success in 2021.
