Of all the positions of need Georgia had for 2021, it was defensive back, as Georgia lost guys like Eric Stokes, Tyson Campbell, Richard LeCounte, and Tyrique Stevenson to the NFL or to the portal. It seems inevitable that Georgia will play lots of freshmen this season in the defensive backfield.

Luckily, Georgia was able to bring in former All-ACC and Clemson standout Derion Kendrick, West Virginia star Tykee Smith, and Alabama’s Brandon Turnage from the transfer portal to help fill that need for this season.

Kamari Lassiter could be a big-time player this year on the defensive side of the ball. A native of Tuscaloosa, Ala. (of all places), Lassiter had 14 pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and six interceptions from 2019-2020 during high school.

In an interview with JC Shelton on the UGA Football Live podcast, Lassiter said he models he looked up to Richard LeCounte a lot and said he hopes to develop skills he has:

"“I mean he’s the epitome of what it is to be a Georgia Bulldog. I’ve seen him show great leadership and I’ve had a conversation with him one time and I could really tell that he was all in and everything. That’s somebody who’s really already done it and he’s going to the highest level football and you know, that’s one of my goals as well. So, I’m trying to be like him, but be myself at the same time.”"

Lassiter has shown he has the talent to perform like LeCounte. Let’s hope he can show that in 2021.
