The two-time walk-on can also make the argument as the best former walk-on to come through college football. His 34-6 record as the starting quarterback at Oklahoma is also one of the best the Big 12 has to offer.
The Kliff Kingsbury era in Lubbock started off with a bang with a 7-0 start, including a 20-10 win over No. 24 TCU.
Mayfield tossed seven touchdowns in his first two career games and was instrumental in the team reaching No. 10 in the AP Poll. Texas Tech would then start to fall off, and finished the season 8-5.
One of Mayfield’s highlight performances came in a loss to No. 4 Baylor. Regardless of the blowout loss, Mayfield threw for 314 yards and four touchdowns.
Mayfield chose to enter the transfer portal and landed at Oklahoma in the spring of 2014. Due to the NCAA Transfer rules, Mayfield sat out the 2014 season and watched the Sooners have their worst season since 2009.
His 2015 season was among the best sophomore seasons in the conference, with 3,700 passing yards and 36 touchdowns. Mayfield led the Sooners to a 12-2 season and the school’s first appearance in the College Football Playoff.
Mayfield’s success would be duplicated in 2016 and 2017, with two more conference championships and many more historic performances. Whether it was dueling with Patrick Mahomes in the return trip to Lubbock in 2016 or clinching a Big 12 championship appearance in a thrilling high scoring win over Will Grier-led West Virginia.
Mayfield had an abundance of success while doing it with his own personality and swagger. His characteristics, alongside his road to success, make him an anomaly in college football and why he is one of the best quarterbacks in Big 12 football history.
