The quarterback position is not the only position that will look different for Notre Dame football this fall in South Bend. Former wide receivers, Javon McKinley and Ben Skowronek are no longer with the Irish, as both have moved on to start their NFL careers.

The Irish will have to replace those two on the outside as both of them were seniors in 2020.

Both McKinley and Skowronek finished in the top three for receptions last season. McKinley led the team with 42 receptions for 717 yards, and three touchdowns. Skowronek missed some time early on with a hamstring injury, but still had a big year for Notre Dame, racking up 29 receptions for 439 yards, and a team-high of five touchdowns through the air.

Notre Dame has recruited well over the past few years which is great, and also have wide receiver Avery Davis returning for his fifth year to play in the slot. Joe Wilkins also had some big catches last year and should get more reps, and more opportunities this year. Having these guys back is great news for whoever ends up starting the opener under center for the Irish against Florida State.

One name who will not be seen catching balls for the Irish is Jordan Johnson. The former Irish wide out announced on May 9 last month that he was transferring from Notre Dame. It did not take long for him to find a new home as he committed to play at UCF a few days later.

Even without Johnson Notre Dame still has a lot of players capable of getting it done for many years to come in the future.

Here are three breakout receiver candidates for Notre Dame in 2021.
