Brian Kelly has been a recruiting madman for Notre Dame football over the last couple of cycles and it looks like he may be closer to truly contending for national titles than people think.

Sure, the Irish have made the playoff twice over the past three years, but you have to realize they didn’t exactly stand a chance against Alabama and Clemson, losing by at least three scores in each contest. Kelly is 0-2 in playoff games, but he’s getting there because the talent level continues to rise.

That’s not going to stop any time soon as he reeled in an impressive 2021 recruiting class and the 2022 cycle may just become his best yet.

A ton of top names are on the Irish’s board but one elite prospect is currently trending toward Notre Dame after an official visit on June 11. In fact, crystal ball predictions for Notre Dame are rolling in on 247Sports as the Irish have become the favorite following his visit and it seems like only a matter of time before he makes a decision.

Notre Dame football close to that No. 1 class

Currently, Notre Dame has the No. 3 recruiting class in 2022, and adding Merriweather, who is 247Sports‘ No. 78 prospect in the country, would only improve that. They might take the second spot with his commitment but Notre Dame is far from done adding blue-chip prospects.

Notre Dame currently has 14 commitments in the 2022 class with 10 of them being four-star status. Merriweather could give the Irish their first top-100 recruit, however.

The Irish will have to hold off the likes of Stanford, Tennessee, Oregon, UCLA, USC, and Washington State for the 6-foot-4,185-pound Washington native.
