West Virginia Football: 5 most underrated Mountaineers in 2021
By Phil Poling
West Virginia football’s Leddie Brown and Dante Stills are household names, but what about the unsung heroes? We’ll list the five most underrated Mountaineers for the upcoming 2021 season.
Running back Leddie Brown posted a career-high 1,212 yards from scrimmage and 11 touchdowns during last season’s COVID-shortened campaign. And Dante Stills has been wreaking havoc defensively since 2018, racking up 29 tackles-for-loss and 13 sacks for the Mountaineers in that span. Track records like those have solidified Brown and Stills as household names.
What about the rest of the West Virginia football roster, though? You’ve got guys like Winston Wright and Josh Chandler-Semedo who are excellent players, but maybe not first-team All-Big 12 or All-Americans (yet). Alonzo Addae, Bryce Ford-Wheaton, Akheem Mesidor — these are all players that people tuning into any single game would notice. Moving further down the roster is where we’ll find our guys.
Being an underrated player doesn’t necessarily mean someone who’s unheard of, though. In fact, all five players on this list played last season. However, some had a star teammate at their position, forcing them to be overlooked. We’ve got some youth on this list, too, but I expect those guys to be household names by season’s end.
However underrated a player may be — on this WVU team, in the Big 12, in the entire country — we’ve got a strong group of players for you. The youth on the list is surprisingly experienced, while the veterans have long been under-the-radar contributors. These are the 5 most underrated Mountaineers of the 2021 season.
