One thing that stuck out is that he never quit on the season and continued to lead to the end. He even had star running back Trestan Ebner stick up for him on Twitter when some called for his job. Not long after the season, Brewer decided it was time for a change of scenery.
Rarely does a player of his caliber and significance to a program leave under such scrutiny. It’s what’s made him a tough player to crack though, and it’s what could make Utah football a dark horse in the Pac-12 come this fall.
Despite the beating he took and rough year, he shook off the season quickly when he moved to the Utah football program. All those positive traits in his game resurfaced when he arrived in Salt Lake City. He started the spring game and showed precision accuracy, completing 15-of-15 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns.
He’s currently the front runner for the starting job, and it seems unlikely he’ll be unseated. A veteran quarterback combined with the always-tough defenses under head coach Kyle Whittingham could equal major success for the Utes.
Great quarterbacks boast elite composure and mental toughness. Anyone would be hard-pressed to find another signal-caller entering this season that’s gone through a wilder, roller-coaster career yet remained productive and poised.
