Texas A&M Football adds elite QB to 2023 recruiting class
It’s never too early to land your quarterback recruit and Texas A&M football did that in the 2023 recruiting class on Friday with the commitment of Eli Holstein.
As most of the top 2022 quarterbacks have all committed and found a home, teams are starting to focus more on the 2023 class, and in that regard, Texas A&M football is already a step ahead of many competitors.
That’s because the Aggies landed one of the top 2023 quarterbacks on Friday, getting a verbal commitment from four-star Eli Holstein.
Holstein is out of Zachary, Louisiana, and is ranked 125th overall in the 2022 class according to the 247 sports composite rankings, as well as seventh among quarterbacks.
And if the excitement of Texas A&M football coach Jimbo Fisher is any measure, this is a very good get for the Aggies, at least according to what Holstein told 247 sports:
"“He lit up,” Holstein said. “It was fun. Told me he was more excited than me and I was pretty excited which was pretty cool.”"
The 6-foot-3, 212-pound quarterback chose Texas A&M over a bunch of other big-time programs such as Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Ohio State, and Penn State, among others that offered him already.
At the end of the day, though, he told 247 sports that College Station was the perfect fit. Plus, he’s excited about the talent Fisher and the Aggies are adding to go around him, especially on the offensive line.
"“Just talking to Coach Fisher, what he has planned, especially with my class and the class in front of me, all the guys he’s getting and says he’s going to get,” Holstein explained. “He has a big emphasis on offensive line recruiting which means everything. You never hear a National Championship program that doesn’t have a good offensive line.”"
What the addition means for the Aggies
While Holstein is correct, you don’t hear about championship programs that don’t have good offensive lines, you also don’t hear about teams winning with lackluster quarterback play.
Quarterbacks make everything go and that’s why they are always among the first recruits to come off the board in a respective recruiting class. In 2022, even though signing day is still about six months away, none of the top-20 quarterbacks are uncommitted right now.
Holstein is the first top-10 quarterback in 2023 to commit to a school, but more will be on the way soon and it adds to an impressive pipeline of QB talent for the Aggies, which also includes 2022 commit Conner Weigman, the No. 31 overall prospect in his class.
Holstein will also make it four consecutive recruiting classes in which Texas A&M has landed the commitment of a top-200 quarterback, which is how you win big in the SEC.
Overall, it’s the second pledge in 2023 for the Aggies, who also have a commitment from Anthony James, a top-100 defensive lineman.
