It’s still more than two years from the time a high school recruit in the class of 2023 will their first collegiate snaps. A lot can happen in two years. But for Texas A&M football, it’s never too early to start building toward the future.

That’s exactly what the Aggies are working to do on the field following a top-five finish in 2020. It’s a process they continued with the commitment of four-star quarterback Eli Holstein.

Holstein is the No. 7 rated quarterback in the 2023 class. To date, he’s the highest-rated signal-caller in his class to make a commitment to any university. He joins fellow blue-chip recruit Anthony Janes as the early building blocks of a Texas A&M class that ranks No. 2 in the national ranks.

It’s true that early recruiting rankings aren’t infallible this early in the process — Boston College and Baylor rank third and fourth, respectively. But for a program like Texas A&M which has maintained its spot inside the top 10 each of the past three cycles, and currently sits at No. 13 in the 2022 class, the high rankings lean more towards a trend than an anomaly.

More importantly, Holstein promises to continue a streak of blue-chip quarterbacks to come to College Station. Five-star Connor Weigman is the Aggies’ 2022 quarterback commit. Four-star Eli Stowers proceeded him in 2021 with four-star Haynes King coming before him in 2020.

If both Weigman and Holstein put pen to paper, the Aggies will have signed a blue-chip quarterback in five consecutive recruiting classes. Winning championships requires talent, and the quarterback position is the most important position on the field. Texas A&M has that part of the process down to a science.
