There aren’t many coaches in the country in the same situation as Clay Helton.

Helton is coming off a winning season in which USC football played for a conference title but before the 2020 campaign, he held the hottest season in the nation. That really hasn’t changed despite the 2020 success and solid recruiting as USC fans have been calling for his job for years.

If he continues to win and recruit at a high level, however, fans are going to have no choice but to support him and the athletic department will have to keep him.

USC currently has the No. 13 recruiting class in the country for 2022 as well as the No. 1 group in the Pac-12 in the cycle. That looks like it might be on the verge of improving as the Trojans picked up a big crystal ball on Sunday afternoon from none other than Steve Wiltfong who is the director of football recruiting for 247Sports. When he puts in a crystal ball, it’s usually telling.

Who was the crystal ball for, you ask? Four-star defensive end DJ Wesolak who’s a top-200 prospect from Missouri.

Wesolak is ranked the No. 178 overall player in the class as well as the ninth-best edge rusher and third-best Missouri-based prospect, according to the composite. Adding him would almost instant jump the Trojans into that top-10 range nationally.

Helton building a strong 2022 USC football class

USC has just nine commitments in its 2022 class and the average rating is close to a 93 so that just shows that the Trojans are taking quality over quantity so far.

If Wesolak is to commit to the Trojans, he would become the fifth-highest ranked USC pledge behind a couple of five-stars and the Nos. 152 and 177 prospects in the class. Helton is still winning in the recruiting world and that’s bad news for his doubters.

Wesolak holds nearly 50 (not a typo) offers and has Florida, Alabama, Clemson, Arizona State, Auburn, Texas A&M, Miami, Oklahoma, and Texas high on his list.

Florida is the only other official he has taken thus far but the Trojans currently have all the momentum.
