Texas A&M Football: Jalen Wydermyer will be 2021’s Kyle Pitts
Kyle Pitts had himself quite the year in 2020, catching 43 passes for 770 yards and 12 touchdowns, putting up bigger numbers as a junior than he did as a freshman and sophomore combined. And it only took eight games.
It didn’t take long for him to hear his name called in the 2021 NFL Draft as he went in the top five to the Atlanta Falcons.
Texas A&M football star Jalen Wydermyer is hoping for the same success.
Like Pitts, Wydermeyer had a big sophomore season which has him listed as the top returning tight end in the SEC and a potential All-American, but a lot of his potential junior success will depend on the right fit at quarterback for Texas A&M.
Kellen Mond is no longer there to throw to Wydermyer 5-6 times per game and the Aggies will have to rely on either Haynes King or Zach Calzada. That uncertainty could hurt the outlook of Wydermyer’s junior year and hopes of being that first tight end selected in the 2022 NFL Draft.
But the talent is there for him to accomplish everything Pitts did the year prior.
Through two seasons, Wydermyer has 953 yards and 12 touchdowns on 78 receptions — those numbers crush what Pitts did in his first two seasons at Florida. Plus, he came in as a “big receiver” but has developed into one of the nation’s premier tight ends — sound like anyone you know? Also, Wydermyer and Pitts have similar builds. Pitts is one inch taller and about 10 pounds lighter, but both are very athletic tight ends.
Coming off a 506-yard, six-touchdown season with Texas A&M while leading the team in receptions, Wydermyer has to feel good about his draft prospects.
Draft sites high on the Texas A&M football star
Just about any tight end ranking for the 2022 NFL Draft or position rankings heading into the 2021 season have Wydermyer on top.
Iowa State’s Charlie Kolar may be his biggest competition for the John Mackey Award and spot atop the tight end rankings heading into the 2022 NFL Draft, but if we’re going based on pure talent and production when put in the right position, Wydermyer takes the cake.
Wydermyer can take over games with his dominance at the tight end position and he’s a matchup nightmare for defenses.
If I was a betting man, I’d say he’s going to be this season’s Pitts.
