Bowling Green Football: Can the Falcons rebound from winless season?
Despite having the season shortened because of the COVID-19 pandemic, last season was a disaster for Bowling Green football and the Falcons wound up being the worst team in the country and one of the worst division one football teams in recent memory. So I guess there is nowhere to go but up for third-year head coach Scot Loeffler.
When Loeffler was hired in 2019, it was a bit of a head-scratching hire. Despite being the offensive coordinator at some high-profile programs such as Auburn, Virginia Tech, and Boston College, Loeffler has never led one of the top offenses in college football and it was a curious decision for a strong program like Bowling Green to make that move.
One thing that gave his tenure a rocky start at Bowling Green was hiring longtime defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder as the defensive coordinator in 2019, despite VanGorder having not been a very good coach in quite some time. Fortunately for Bowling Green fans, VanGorder retired and Eric Lewis took over on that side of the ball.
This is a year that Loeffler has to show that there is optimism in the program. He has not had much success since taking over and this is a program that was used to contending in the MAC under former coaches Urban Meyer and Dino Babers. After winning three games in his debut season, Loeffler did not win a game in last year’s abbreviated campaign and lost every game by at least twenty-five points.
Nobody is expecting the Falcons to go to a bowl game or challenge for a conference title, but the Falcons must be more competitive against some of the lesser teams in the conference.
