Big 12 Football: Each team’s trap and peak games in 2021
By Andrew Tineo
Taking a look into potential trap and peak games for each Big 12 football team in 2021.
Each season, there are games and certain teams that could be called a trap game. Also, they could be a matchup nightmare for the other team, and could very well be a team to put another on “upset alert”.
Big 12 football was a whirlwind, throughout the entirety of its 2020 season. It was the worst power five conference in the country last year against non-conference opponents.
Turned out, Big 12 football teams went 5-1 in bowl season and was the lone league to have two New Year Six bowl wins. Looking ahead to this season, we take a look at each team’s trap and peak games in 2021 and how realistic the result could be for each.
Baylor
Trap Game: Texas State
Although I do not expect the Bears to lose this game, this is one that is most certainly set up to be surprisingly good Week 1 game in the Big 12. The first contest of the 2021 season for each team will feature a brand new quarterback for Baylor.
It also opens up what new offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes has been working on throughout the off-season and how the “wide zone” offense will be played for the gentlemen wearing green and gold.
Jacob Zeno and Gerry Bohannon are battling it out and getting real-time game reps for the first time since the Sugar Bowl during the 2019 season. Texas State went 2-10 last year, but was among the youngest teams in the conference. They were solid on offense and Brady McBride had an above average freshman season, throwing for 1,925 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Normally the first game of the season isn’t meant to be pegged as a trap game.
However, with what the Baylor offense will be doing and bringing in transfers will make this unit under construction until there is more to provide.
Peak Game: Texas
Texas is a very different contrast, and is set up purely on schedule. The Longhorns have a grueling five game stretch to start Big 12 play, and Baylor gets a home game with the Horns in the thick of it.
Baylor fell to the Longhorns 27-16 last year, while the defense performed relatively well throughout. This game is played a day before Halloween and the offensive system should be established and run better than Week 1.
Texas lost key pieces along the front seven and the secondary although experienced is not the most stout unit. The Longhorns ranked 108th in the country in pass defense.
With whichever quarterback taking snaps, and an offense that is designed to get the quarterback out of the pocket, it’s a good combo for success on offense.
