The landscape for MEAC football in the 2021 fall season will be extremely different as there are now just six football teams in the conference due to multiple teams leaving (University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Coppin State do not have football programs).

This season will see former members in the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats and Florida A&M Rattlers transitioning to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) as well as the North Carolina A&T moving on to the Big South alongside fellow former MEAC member Hampton.

This will be the first full MEAC football season since 2019 as most of the conference opted out of playing a rescheduled spring schedule.

The spring season featured Delaware State playing two games each against Howard and South Carolina State winning both against the former and splitting against the latter. In addition, Delaware State and South Carolina State each played non-conference games.

South Carolina State is the reigning MEAC champion, winning as co-champions alongside North Carolina A&T in 2019. However, A&T received the Celebration Bowl berth by virtue of defeating South Carolina State in the regular season.

The last current MEAC member to solely win the conference was North Carolina Central in the 2016 season. Four of the last five seasons have seen North Carolina A&T win the MEAC.

It will be interesting to see who will take over North Carolina A&T’s spot as the top team in the MEAC.
