South Florida Football: Bulls could be in for rough season in 2021
Quarterback competition headlines questions about Bulls offense in 2021
USF has not had a consistent quarterback since Quinton Flowers left and it is unclear where the offense is going to turn this season. I think that the quarterback competition will likely come down to North Carolina transfer Cade Fortin or Miami transfer Jarren Williams.
Williams is the more talented of the two quarterbacks, but Fortin has more familiarity with the system. Williams last played at the division one level in 2019 as Miami’s starting quarterback, before deciding to transfer and play junior college ball last season. Fortin played sparingly last season, completing 4 of 8 passes. Expect this battle to extend to the fall, but I think Williams will win out and start game one vs NC State.
Kelly Joiner is back at running back and he will be joined by Oregon transfer Darrian Felix. Felix did not play last season and his emergence could be big for the running game. The running game was not particularly strong last season and if it does not get better, it could spell trouble for the offense, especially if the quarterback situation does not get settled.
Two of the top three receivers returns for South Florida, along with some promising young players. Bryce Miller and Latrell Williams should be better with more experience this year and the young players like Xavier Weaver and Jimmy Horn Jr should factor in as well. This is a talented group but lacks a lot of experience.
The offensive line returns all five starters and that is good news for an offense that is lacking in good news. There are a lot of question marks on the offense, but some of them could be really helped if Williams can provide stability and talent at the quarterback position.
