After being one of the worst programs for years, Temple football has had a nice run of success for the past decade.

Al Golden led the turn around for the Owls and it was then carried on by Steve Addazio, Geoff Collins, and Matt Rhule. That’s a very strong list of coaches who went on to have success elsewhere it was thought that when Temple hired Rod Carey away from Northern Illinois, it was going to keep on chugging along.

After an 8-5 debut season in 2019, Carey went 1-6 last season and that was a surprise to many due to the consistency of the program for the past 10 years. Now the question for Carey and Temple is: Was 2020 just an off year or a sign of things to come?

One of the reasons that Temple was not very good was that they could not keep all of their starters out on the field together. No quarterback played in more than three games and various other positions were shuffling around constantly. That is not a recipe for success and I think that Carey realizes it and that is why he went and mined the transfer portal for some impact players.

After having more than a dozen players leave to transfer and almost as many transfers coming in, Temple is going to look like a much different team in 2021. With so many transfers, Carey is hoping for a quick turnaround and that these experienced players can help the Owls get back to winning like they are used to. If not, Carey could start to feel some heat for losing.
