College football: 2010s biggest what-ifs: 25. Chase Young never gets suspended

It may seem inconsequential in the long run but Chase Young had the opportunity to set a seemingly impossible record to break.

In 2019, Young entered the season as the prohibited favorite to be the number one overall pick. He proved why he was thought so highly of with a monster final year for Ohio State. Young’s 16.5 sacks at the end of the year, broke the single-season record set by Vernon Gholston in 2007 with 14.

Although his accomplishment are mostly praised, Young could have had more. Unfortunately for him, he was suspended two games due to an unauthorized loan from a family friend, something he repaid in full.

In his first game back from said suspension, Young recorded three sacks against Penn State. And while he still managed to set the school record with 16.5 sacks, if he were never suspended in the first place, who’s to say he couldn’t clear the 20 sack mark. Also, Young currently ranks second in school history with 30.5 sacks for the entirety of his career. Mike Vrabel and his 36 is a number Young could have easily surpassed if he played every game that season.

Be that as it may, Young’s place in Ohio State’s history books should be safe for now. But it just makes you think, where would he rank if he was never suspended?
