College football: 2010s biggest what-ifs: 6. No miraculous kick-six

It was the same song and dance seemingly every year.

No matter how hard the Auburn Tigers tried, they were simply no match for Alabama. In 2013, however, they played their rivals extremely tight this time around in the Iron Bowl. With only a few seconds left in the game, Alabama drove down the length of the field and but were stopped way short. Instead of punting it away, they attempted to knock in a field goal from over 55 yards. With the game tied at 28, the hope was that either the kick would sail through the uprights to give them the three-point win, or, at the very least, the game would go into overtime.

Auburn cornerback, Chris Davis, had different plans. He camped out in the back of the endzone, caught the woefully short kick, and then proceeded to run the ball back for an improbable touchdown, giving Auburn the last second win.

As a result, Auburn went on to play for the National title. And although they would ultimately lose against Florida State, they ended any hopes that Alabama had of taking home yet another championship.

Needless to say, if Alabama somehow made that 56 yarder or took care of business in overtime, it’s likely that for the umpteenth time, Alabama would have taken home another National title.
