Just like the No. 2 guy on this list, Adrian Martinez‘s career with Nebraska football has been marred by inconsistency. He’s dealt with injuries and was benched for a time last season by head coach Scott Frost.

However, taking a seat and watching Luke McCaffrey seemed to be the best thing for Martinez. He was a leader on the sidelines and he wasn’t negative. He didn’t pout and when his number was called, he played some of his best football as a Husker.

Martinez threw for 1,055 yards last season with four touchdowns and three interceptions. He also completed 71 percent of his throws and ran for more than 500 yards.

Of course, the 6-foot-2, 220-pound signal-caller has flashed potential throughout his career. During his freshman year in 2017, Nebraska probably would have gone bowling if he had been able to stay healthy.

Martinez has 31 touchdown passes for his career, 22 rushing touchdowns, and more than 1,700 yards on the ground. He should easily eclipse 2,000 yards but he needs to start racking up more wins.

The offensive line should be solid and the receiving core should be as good as he’s had. Running back is a question mark, but if USC transfer Markese Stepp can deliver, Martinez should have everything needed around him to succeed.

And at the end of the day, Nebraska football’s fortunes will depend largely on how Martinez plays this season for the Big Red.
